Carson was brought to our shelter in March after her owner had moved away. She didn’t really know what to think of the shelter atmosphere. For several weeks, she spent most of her time hiding under the blankets in her kennel. She is a very loving cat, however, she does get a little stressed out in new situations. Knowing this, we are able to take things slowly to prevent any stress.

Carson is looking for a quiet home to call her own. She needs someone who understands that it may take her some time to come out of her shell. But once she does, you will find that she is a very playful and loving cat. You see, Carson still occasionally tips over her food and water bowl. And until the other day, we assumed she was trying to hide under her blanket again. That was until I was washing dishes and happened to hear a noise coming from her kennel. When I looked over, she was playing with her toy mouse. It went under her blanket and when she was trying to get it, her food bowl tipped! I was so excited because this was the first time that I have ever seen this shy girl play with a toy.

She is very timid around other animals but we are slowly transitioning her to our general population cat room. And we are happy to report that the transition is going very well! She is now able to be out when staff is at the shelter. She enjoys being able to stretch her legs and get some fresh air on the cat porch. Carson loves her big comfy dog beds and rumor has it, she enjoys catnip as a special treat.

If you are looking for a sweet and quiet cat that will still demand some cuddles, this is your girl! Stop by our shelter during visiting hours to fall in love!

Featured Pet: Alexa (6/18/19)

Alexa is a beautiful and petite long haired cat that is about a year old. She is currently our longest resident at the shelter. When she was first brought into the shelter, she would try to escape every time you tried to open her kennel. And when you put your hand in to grab her, she would hiss and swat at you. Let’s just say she wasn’t the most loving cat. However, with some patience and a whole lot of love she learned to love the cuddles.

A few months after she came in, she was adopted by a very sweet lady that had recently adopted a small, timid dog from our shelter too! Everything was going very well, however Alexa quickly realized that she didn’t really like to share the attention anymore. She would go after the dog when she wasn’t getting the attention. So sadly, she was brought back to the shelter.

In GP, Alexa rules the roost. If she walks by, other cats will move out of the way. They know not to mess with her. She is often seen taunting the birds that hang out near the cat porch. She can hear the staff opening canned food from a mile away and will stare in the window until the bring it in. Alexa will then go around to every dish to make sure they are all empty.

What is really neat is that Alexa has developed a friendship with one of our other resident cats, Percy. They play together, eat together, and sometimes nap together. Maybe she realized having a friend isn’t that bad! She is a young and playful cat that will keep you on your toes. Shelter staff say that would just watch her play all day if they could.

If you are interested in meeting Alexa, stop by the shelter today! Maybe you would even adopt Percy along with Alexa...we do offer a discount for multiple cats.

PictureCaramel was unwilling to let us hold her for long when she first arrived.
Caramel came to our shelter a few days after Valentine’s day. When she first came in, she was not very accepting to our love and cuddles. In fact, we had to wear protective gloves just to get her out of her kennel to clean. She had a sign on her kennel to warn others that she may bite and scratch. It wasn’t her fault. She was found as a stray and a caring person took her in. However, Caramel does not get along with other cats, so she had to be brought to the shelter. Caramel was terrified of being in a crate, which made it very difficult to clean her kennel. She would scream and hiss when you tried to put her in. And getting her out was just as difficult.

The wonderful lady and her husband that brought her in came to the shelter WEEKLY to check on Caramel and see how she was doing. They would bring treats and toys for her and the other cats as well. To this day, they still make time to come in and see her! You see, we do not judge a person for surrendering an animal. We are so thankful that they care enough to bring them to a safe place. No matter what their past may be, our job is to help these animals find new, loving homes. And that’s just what we do.

After a few months (and getting spayed), Caramel is a whole new cat! If you came in, you wouldn’t believe it was the same cat described above. Our volunteer, Sandy, has spent so much time working with Caramel and showing her that it is okay to trust humans. So what happens when you open her kennel now? Well, she climbs up on your shoulder and demands you hold her for some cuddle time. She goes into the crate for cleaning without any problems. Caramel is also a big fan her her soft kitty bed. She’s a little spoiled at the shelter! However, Caramel still doesn’t like to be around other cats, so she can’t be moved into our General Population room.

This girl has come so far and it breaks our hearts to see her unable to roam free outside of her kennel. She has watched so many cats and dogs come in and get adopted before her. All she wants is a human and a nice comfy bed to call her own. If you do not have any other animals at home and are looking for the perfect addition to your family, stop by the shelter to meet Caramel! You can also download an application at hchskewaneeshelter.org!

Meet Juno! Juno is an 8 month old pointer/beagle mix that is looking for her forever home. She came to our shelter after being rescued from euthanasia in Tennessee. Even though she may not have had the best live, she is one happy-go-lucky pup! Juno has struggled with an intestinal parasite, coccidia, and a severe urinary tract infection but now has a clean bill of health! As you can imagine, trying to potty train a puppy while dealing with infections wasn’t the easiest. Now that she is doing better, she is in a foster home to help her become fully potty trained.
At the shelter, Juno would scratch at the door or bark to let us  know she wanted to go outside. Juno is a playful, but smart puppy.  Her favorite outdoor activity is playing fetch with the shelter staff and spending as much time as she can outside. Although, we have to keep an eye on her because she likes to put everything in her mouth. Juno gets along well with just about everything she has been exposed to: kids, cats, dogs, etc. She is always looking to please and  knows how to sit on command. Did we mention that this little pup LOVES food?! She is the first one to finish her bowl and is like a vacuum cleaner, cleaning up all of the food that may have dropped on the floor.
Juno is looking for a forever family that understands the needs of a puppy. She will need someone that can help her burn off some of her puppy energy and that provide her with the training needed to be a good girl. We can promise you that she will thank you by giving you lots of cuddles and wet kisses!

If you are interested in meeting Juno, please contact the shelter via phone, email, or Facebook to schedule a meet and greet since she in a foster home and is not currently at the shelter.

Meet Elsa! This beautiful girl was named after the ice queen herself after she was found trying to survive the subzero temperatures this past winter. A kind and caring citizen of Kewanee found her and brought her into her home to warm up. She called the Humane Society because she couldn’t keep her and we sent an employee to pick her up right away. Once she was at the shelter, we realized that this poor girl was underweight and needed some TCL as most stray cats do when they come in. Elsa was so grateful of her warm bed, food and water, and a place to call her own out of the harsh weather outside.

At first, she was very timid but was still accepting of our care. Unfortunately, the vet discovered that the end of her tail had frost bite and it needed to be removed.  She also had a bit of frostbite on the tips of her ears but that wasn’t as severe. Since then, she has gotten a bath, a good brushing, and lots of food to help her gain weight.

When she was first moved into our general population cat room, she spent most of her time hiding in the cat tower, not sure of what to think of the other cats. Our staff and volunteers continued to spend time with her and work on socializing her. Since then she has become very comfortable and can be seen roaming around the room or in the window keeping on eye on the staff and volunteers.  Elsa is the guard of the door to the cat porch, sitting close by to keep track of which cats come in and out. Elsa is a long haired cat, so she will require regular brushing to keep her fur beautiful. She does well with other cats in the cat room as long as they aren’t too overbearing. Stop by the shelter during our visiting hours each day from 8-11 am and 5-7 pm to fall in love with this sweet girl!

Featured Pet - Hugo (5/17/19)

Everyone meet Hugo. This dapper young man came to our shelter after someone found him on the streets of Galva trying to survive. At first, he was so timid and scared that he would swat at you if you tried to reach in his kennel. Upon evaluation, we discovered that he had an eye infection which was causing him to have difficulty seeing. Hugo’s eyes were cleaned multiple times a day and treated with a special ointment. Soon Hugo realized that we are here to help him. When we opened his kennel door, he would walk out on his own and jump up on the counter so we could clean his eyes. He loves to sit on the cat tower and look out the window at the birds. But what Hugo loves the most is his food. When he would hear our volunteers or employees preparing his food, he would climb back in his kennel and patiently wait for it to be delivered. It wasn’t long before Hugo won over the hearts of all the employees and volunteers at the shelter. I think we would all take him home if we could! He has such a laid back and easy going personality. Add that to his plump, round face and squinty eyes. Who wouldn’t fall in love with him? Don’t you think he looks like a mini bobcat?

Since he came to our shelter in the end of March he has been housed in our isolation room due to his eye infection. Since then, he has been microchipped and gotten his rabies shot. Today, with the support of our loving volunteer Charlene, Hugo made a trip to our general population cat room. He explored and said hello to the other resident cats. Within minutes, he went out to our cat porch, sat on a cat tower, and observed the birds playing on the nearby chair. He even made friends with one of our shy cats, Elsa.

Now that Hugo’s eyes are looking better, he can officially begin the search for his forever home. If you are interested in adopting Hugo, please stop by the shelter during our visiting hours to meet him.
