PictureCaramel was unwilling to let us hold her for long when she first arrived.
Caramel came to our shelter a few days after Valentine’s day. When she first came in, she was not very accepting to our love and cuddles. In fact, we had to wear protective gloves just to get her out of her kennel to clean. She had a sign on her kennel to warn others that she may bite and scratch. It wasn’t her fault. She was found as a stray and a caring person took her in. However, Caramel does not get along with other cats, so she had to be brought to the shelter. Caramel was terrified of being in a crate, which made it very difficult to clean her kennel. She would scream and hiss when you tried to put her in. And getting her out was just as difficult.

The wonderful lady and her husband that brought her in came to the shelter WEEKLY to check on Caramel and see how she was doing. They would bring treats and toys for her and the other cats as well. To this day, they still make time to come in and see her! You see, we do not judge a person for surrendering an animal. We are so thankful that they care enough to bring them to a safe place. No matter what their past may be, our job is to help these animals find new, loving homes. And that’s just what we do.

After a few months (and getting spayed), Caramel is a whole new cat! If you came in, you wouldn’t believe it was the same cat described above. Our volunteer, Sandy, has spent so much time working with Caramel and showing her that it is okay to trust humans. So what happens when you open her kennel now? Well, she climbs up on your shoulder and demands you hold her for some cuddle time. She goes into the crate for cleaning without any problems. Caramel is also a big fan her her soft kitty bed. She’s a little spoiled at the shelter! However, Caramel still doesn’t like to be around other cats, so she can’t be moved into our General Population room.

This girl has come so far and it breaks our hearts to see her unable to roam free outside of her kennel. She has watched so many cats and dogs come in and get adopted before her. All she wants is a human and a nice comfy bed to call her own. If you do not have any other animals at home and are looking for the perfect addition to your family, stop by the shelter to meet Caramel!
